Traditional Blue Tattooed Roses

I have babbled about the meanings and history of
Yellow roses a bit… and I have babbled about realistic styles of tattoo roses, but today I touch on the blue rose.

Blue roses do not exist in nature. They are no creation of God or the earth.
They are a creation of man.

Most blue roses are created by dying white roses blue.
Some are created by genetic-modification, but these usually come out a Violet blue.
The first real blue roses didn’t come about until just a few years ago (2004)
through genetic engineering. A cloned gene from a type of petunia was used to achieve this, but even then – the TRUE BLUE color sought after by the researchers didn’t appear. The rose is blue, but way darker than the traditional blue sought after by the public.
They say it won’t be to long however until science can do what nature didn’t.

tattoo of traditional roses on chest

Nice set of very pretty, semi traditional blue roses tattooed on the chest. The roses have been a regular theme in tattoos forever among both men and women, but the chest tattoos (above the breasts) did not become common for women until the 1990's. I am glad they have.

What is it about blue roses besides being pretty that makes people want them?
Blue roses signify being enchanted by something or someone.
They symbolize love at first sight, magic, mystery and attaining the impossible.
Blue roses are also considered a royal color of rose. Partially because of the violet hues and partially because of the extra steps in creating them made them a rare sight back in the day.

A great poem by Rudyard Kipling

Blue Roses

Roses red and roses white
Plucked I for my love’s delight.
She would none of all my posies–
Bade me gather her blue roses.

Half the world I wandered through,
Seeking where such flowers grew.
Half the world unto my quest
Answered me with laugh and jest.

Home I came at wintertide,
But my silly love had died
Seeking with her latest breath
Roses from the arms of Death.

It may be beyond the grave
She shall find what she would have.
Mine was but an idle quest–

Roses white and red are best!

In the world of tattoos~
The blue rose often is a symbol for loss and sadness.
For me… it is a fitting color for such things as blue lacks warmth.
Sadness is rarely warm.
